Cheap AeroGarden Master Chef Herb Guide Review

I'll make this brief: you need to store these nutrients in the FREEZER! Trust me - it makes a world of difference! I had to call AeroGarden customer service on another issue, and he asked me if I had any other questions. I discussed the poor growth I have repeatedly experienced with my salad greens and how they seem to grow white instead of green. He asked me where I store my nutrients, then suggested I keep them in the freezer! My whole family has been amazed by the difference it has made: the lettuce plants very quickly started turning green and the growth rate significantly improved. Try it - it will make you a much happier AeroGardener!!
I use this aerogarden for my bonsai, a 11 in. ficus. I took the bowl off, and just set the pot on the base. My tree is growing well, but it is amost out of room, it would be nice if the aero garden was a little bit taller, but I probably won't let my ficus get much taller. If you are using it to grow a bonsai, you might want to get a taller one, depending on how tall your tree already is, but I am satisfied with it. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, since I am only using it for the light. I haven't actually grown the flowers, but I wanted to let people know that you can use it for other things too.
Well, this is my fourth garden for my Pro-100, and so far I have more herbs than I can use. The Basil always seems to do well, and this garden is no exception. Tons of basil!
The Cilantro has done better in this garden than it has ever done for me. The parsley is growing nicely. The only herb in this garden not doing so well is the chives, but to be honest I never use them anyway.
Overall this is a great garden, if you are growing it, just keep pinching the tops of the basil off instead of raising the light, until all of the herbs catch up with the basil. Otherwise you might have trouble with the mint and cilantro.
Overall, this garden has been worth the money for me. You can buy more herbs for the money at the store, but then again there is a convenience factor with these gardens. You will always have some herbs available when you decide to cook a certain meal, without going to the store.
I'm still in the early stages with my first garden, but the product is SUPER EASY to use, has indicators when to add water and nutrient tablets. GOOD TIP: Mix up the nutrient tablets in a glass of water FIRST so that they are almost completely dissolved and THEN add to reservoir. Otherwise, they don't completely dissolve and sit on the bottom. Perhaps that's why some folks have sprouting/growth issues. Also it's best to use distilled water- tap or well water has too many nutrients/chemicals in it and can overwhelm the growth system. The hydroponic pump is quiet (unlike some of the later models, whose reviews I've been reading). I have the Spring Flowers package. The plants are doing very well, except for one pod which didn't sprout so I added my own seeds. They've recently lowered the prices at aerogarden on just about everything so seed pods and lights, especially, are cheaper. I also surround the aerogarden with my small potted plants which do surprisingly well with the light the system shines for 16 hours a day. My nutrients pouches became too moisturized and leaked and I emailed Aerogarden and they sent me free tablets in about a week! So I'd recommend emailing rather than calling. Good luck
I am thoroughly impressed with this Aerogarden. It has been a couple of weeks and everything is sprouting up and is growing amazingly fast and GREEN.
Amazon shipping fiasco:
First one Amazon shipped to us it was in a cheap cardboard box, you know the kind it is a flimsy cardboard you can tear through with a finger nail. It was inside a larger Amazon box but it was smashed on one side. Inside of the cheap box was the Aero garden smashed and all of the bulbs were broken. Amazon sent us one the next day along with a UPC for the outside of the box for the RMA. The next one was in a COMPLETELY different box, like from another company all together. I am not sure how we could get 2 different products from one manufacturer in 2 different boxes. The second box was a full color nice cardboard with all of the parts intact.
S.A.D.
If you have Seasonal Affective Disorder your psychiatrist or MD will probably prescribe a full spectrum light for you to have near you for the winter months. This grow kit contains 3 of those lights and if you place this near you say, when you are watching TV you will get many hours of natural light, while watching your plants grow!
Bonus plant growth:
That being said the lights are amazingly bright. They have to mimic the sun for goodness sake. I have this in my kitchen next to other house plants. As an added benefit is if you place the Aerogarden next to your other house plants they will get the benefit of all that extra light. I have succulents and cacti next to it and they are all growing MUCH better. Setting the lights to turn off at night is a breeze. Just hold the light on/off button on until the light button blinks meaning it took the time. It will then turn on 8 hours later.
Pros:
>> Grow anywhere at any time of the year
>> VERY easy setup - took 5 minutes from opening box until all set.
>> Pretty much fool-proof
>> Lots of extra light that will turn off at night automatically.
>> 7 spots vs 6 in a smaller model
Cons:
You should put in the amount of lumen's put out by the bulb, along with wattage and other specs. It would make me more willing to buy if I were told everything up front. Thanks
This sponge media appears to be the same as what came in my old seed pods.(I purchased the 7-pod unit used.) I've just planted my lettuce seeds--hope it works! I didn't realize the seller also sells substitute nutrients. And I purchased a different hydroponic nutrient. If the nutes are as close as the sponges are to the to what came with my seed pods, I would try those as well. I'm just going to use what I have now though and hope it works.
I got my areogarden as a gift a little over a year ago and was ecstatic. I live about 12 hours away from my family so when I go home for Christmas or any other trip that takes over a week of being away from my aerogarden it dies because I cant add the water.
My aerogarden came with the general herb kit and I found out the only herb I used from it was basil, so when my first batch starved from a lack of water I decided to get the master gardener kit. Because of my obsession with basil i planted an entire 7 pods of basil. I couldn't trim it back fast enough, I wound up tossing handfulls of basil because it was burning on the lights.
Once again I had to starve my poor plants and go home for about a month, this time i planted only 2 basils and 5 flowers about 2 or 3 weeks ago and low and behold the basil is more than big enough to eat. None of the flowers have bloomed yet, but all are growing nicely.
Honestly I want to buy another areogarden just to be able to play around with another master gardener kit. Its a very good value as well, for 3 full rounds of plants (obviously you need to buy your own seeds). I've also heard that the dirt refills for the seed starter kit works with the master gardener kit too. 70 pods for plus nutrients will get you 10 full rounds on a 7 pod areogarden. I love it ! !
ps.. I kill every plant I put in the garden.. i an the true black thumb.. so if i can do this anyone can
I, too, was disappointed in the fact that this was just made of Styrofoam. The water started to stagnant after just a couple of days. But I bought a cheap 5 gallon fish pump and an airstone, dropped it in the water, and now it works just like the Aerogarden 3. And no bad smells. It's just been a week and over 75% of my seeds have already sprouted! I was expecting a greater failure rate - I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all these plants! Overall, this is a great plant starter, just a bit pricey. But most of the Aerogarden items are over priced. If you want to do this to save money, this isn't the way to go. But if you're doing this to enjoy watching the plants sprout, and having something that is useful as well as decorative, this is the way to go. I have 3 Aerogardens, and they look very nice in my dining room, especially when the plants start to grow.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 82-year-old Mom, and she's been enjoying it very much. The flowers are growing well and blooming, though one of them is not as robust as the others. She had some trouble getting the light/dark cycles set at first---the directions were not all that clear for this model---but we eventually figured out that she just needed to get up early in the morning, unplug it, and plug it back in to reset the timing. I like hearing her reports on her garden's progress, too (kind of the ideal low maintenance "pet" for her, really...), and will probably get her a set of herb pods to try next.
Finally, a replacement grow sponge that works. These sponges come in packs of 70, and are exactly the right size for replacing those highly overpriced seed pods for my AeroGarden 6 Elite. And as a bonus, the seller threw in a free package of those all so important nute tabs! Don't throw away your used seed pods; simply recycle the little plastic cone-shaped baskets by inserting a new grow sponge. Tuck your own seed into the little "dimple" at the top of the sponge, push it into the plastic cone and you're good to go. For clones, split the sponge halfway down with a razor and tuck the bottom of your shoot securely into the sponge before pushing it into your cone. Proceed as you normally would for growing stuff in your AeroGarden 6 Elite. For some reason the AeroGarden catalog only sells the short fat replacement sponges that go with their older model gardens, such as AeroGarden 7. (AeroGarden is a fabulous product, but they charge nearly TWENTY DOLLARS (!) for six seed pods??---Please!)
